12 Reasons Why I'm Switching from iPhone to Blackberry Bold

Now that the dust has settled on the 3G iPhone announcement, I'm seriously considering switching from my ATT first generation iPhone to the Blackberry Bold. Here's a good comparison of the two devices on Tech Digest. Here's why I'm thinking of switching:
  1. Physical keyboard. I'll never be as fast on the iPhone keyboard as I was on a Blackberry.
  2. Copy-paste. As I've written before. It's really unforgivable to release any computer without copy-paste.
  3. Modem tethering. 3G is fast enough for most of my Internet needs when I'm on the road. It seems the 3G iPhone will be harder to jailbreak to enable modem tethering.
  4. Bluetooth headphones for music. There are several great options of wireless headphones for the Blackberry. I'm tired of the wires with my iPhone.
  5. To-do list. Again, it's pretty unforgivable not to have one on the iPhone. I know there are plenty online, but these are slower and sometimes not available.
  6. Integrated notes. Although the iPhone has notes, they are not saved anywhere on my Mac. So I can't create a note on my Mac and have it appear on my iPhone. Very lame.
  7. Instant Messaging. I can't tell if the SDK for the iPhone will allow instant messaging like AIM and Google Talk, but I doubt it. This would have been included in the WWDC demo.
  8. Durability. The glass screen of the iPhone is a very poor choice. I'm surprised I have not broken it yet. A phone needs to be able to withstand a drop.
  9. Camera quality. The Blackberry has a better camera with a flash. I use the camera on my phone more and more, especially to take photos of whiteboards at work.
  10. Video. The Blackberry records video.
  11. Voice Memos. This is a great way to record thoughts, or interviews.
  12. Third Party Applications. I don't want to be tied down by iTunes and Apple's approval process for downloading third party applications. I'm a big boy. I don't need Apple babysitting for me.

this is a poor list, there are apps to do everything software wise that the BB does. Apple did NOT create more apps for a reason, they specialize in the device, developers will make the apps..

video, mms, chat etc will all come from the AppStore (or if jailbreaked from other 3rd party sources)

this is a list made by someone who never had an iPhone or never really optimized, customized and took advantage of the thousands of apps out there...

sorry, there may be reasons to switch or get a Curve instead of the 3G iphone, but these are NOT the reasons (except for your first point - i agree some ppl would prefer a standard qwerty)

Bezman.

I actually own an iPhone that is jailbroken. Many of the jailbroken apps freeze the phone, so that's not a great solution.

You have a lot of faith in the appstore. Will you be willing to pay $10 for each of these apps?

"never really optimized, customized and took advantage of the thousands of apps out there"
Wow. Thousands of apps? Give me a break. There are about 100 shitty apps on Installer/Cydia combined, and most of them are entirely useless. The only apps worth getting are anySIM and possibly terminal.

"sorry, there may be reasons to switch or get a Curve instead of the 3G iphone, but these are NOT the reasons"
Actually, this list matches exactly my reasons for getting the Blackberry Bold and abandoning my iPhone. It's been an entire year since its release and the iPhone still lacks important features that users might actually want: such as a to-do list, synchronized notes and copy and paste.

"video, mms, chat etc will all come from the AppStore"
Yeah, and you'll pay hundreds of dollars for software to get functionality that every other platform, such as Windows Mobile, Symbian, Blackberry and Palm get for free to begin with. And you would have waited upwards of a year since the launch of the device for any remotely useful software to come out.

"Apple did NOT create more apps for a reason, they specialize in the device, developers will make the apps.."
Actually, dumbass, Apple spent 20 years making operating systems and associated applications before they came out with your precious iPhone. So they know a thing or two about "making apps".

Bezman comments are made by someone who's never used a PDA or smartphone before buying an iPhone and is completely impressed by some rudimentary applications and functionality with nice packaging. For some reason he can't stand the fact that there are other phones out there with more features and usability than the iPhone.

On the other hand, some of us actually like to use our devices to do useful things.

I've had a blackberry for many years and an iphone since they first came out. I had both simultaneously (one for work, one for personal).

Both are nice but different. The only thing I really prefer on iPhone is the browser, which is a big advantage. The Blackberry is easier to type on, cut/paste is crucial and it is much more reliable.

The new iPhone 2.0 upgrade is an example of some frustration with Apple. Great innovation but the reliability is not up to snuff. I give them props for how big a leap they are taking (much more than RIM has done lately), but the bugs it is causing are poor.

My verdict: If I have to choose one, and run it for business, I'd choose Blackbery for sure. If I want a game like, innovative and engaging device, I'd go iPhone.

I am seriously

@Bezman:

Oh really? You sir, are an idiot.

- No call time
- Doesn't check for duplicate contact entries.

Those two features make the iPhone suck as a phone. Get your shit together Apple!
